10 minBeginner

1The grammar

The verb 'to be' has three forms in the present: am, is and are. We use it to talk about names, jobs, places, age and feelings.

Use 'am' with I. Use 'is' with he, she and it, and with one person or thing. Use 'are' with you, we and they, and with two or more people or things.

For a negative, put 'not' after the verb: She is not here. For a question, put the verb before the subject: Are you ready?

In speaking, we often use short forms: I'm, you're, she's, we're, isn't, aren't. With I, the negative short form is 'I'm not'.
